Heritage Trails Network RICHMOND MARINE FOSSIL MUSEUM Project Fact Sheet THE MUSEUM A group of local volunteers established the Richmond Marine Fossil Museum (also known as Kronosaurus Korner) following a number of internationally significant fossil finds in the Richmond area. These finds included type specimens of a range of marine reptiles. The Queensland Museum, which works closely with the local group, holds the type specimens as the statutory repository. The Queensland Museum supports the Richmond Museum with expert advice and replicas of the type fossil finds. In 1998 the Richmond Shire Council received $200,000 from the State Government towards the construction of a museum building (as an extension of an existing museum established in a former picture theatre) which now houses an important, and growing, collection of fossils from the Richmond region. THE PROJECT This project will extend the recently redeveloped museum to provide exhibition and storage space, including a preparation room for fossils, and additional visitor amenities. It will also allow for improved display presentation. The significance of the finds, and the importance the local community places on this facet of Queensland's natural heritage, is reflected in the close co-operation between the Richmond Shire Council, the Richmond Marine Fossil Museum and the Queensland Museum. NETWORK SIGNIFICANCE Richmond and its museum are important elements in the Queensland Heritage Trails Network. The museum will interpret fossil discoveries of international significance.
